Donald Clavin mailer angers Nassau Democratic chief Jay Jacobs

Hempstead Town Tax Receiver Donald Clavin, a Republican, has been a nonstop critic of Democrat County Executive Laura Curran’s reassessment — holding news conferences, convening community meetings and sending town-paid mailings that demand Curran be more open about the new property values issued Jan. 2.

Clavin’s most recent mailing — a full-color piece with screaming yellow-and-black stripes and a traffic-style warning signal stamped four times on its pages, saying “ALERT! Nassau County Assessment Changes Ahead” — was too much for Nassau Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs.

The Democratic chairman accused Clavin in a news release this week of abusing taxpayer dollars for political purposes, and said the mailer “deliberately misinforms” residents.
