Hon. Ellen Birnbaum

Ellen Birnbaum is serving her third term as Legislator for the 10th District which includes the entire Great Neck Peninsula, Manhasset Hills, the Village of North Hills, and parts of Albertson, Garden City Park, Herricks, Manhasset, North New Hyde Park and Searingtown. She is a lifelong resident of Nassau County and a 36 year resident of Great Neck. Ellen has devoted her career to public service. Prior to being elected to the Legislature, Ellen served as the Director of the Office of Intermunicipal Coordination (OIC) for the Town of North Hempstead where she helped the villages, schools and special districts within the Town save money for taxpayers through shared services and cooperative projects. She also convened many conferences regarding important issues affecting our community such as hurricane preparedness, airplane noise abatement, and police precinct closings. She has worked extensively on constituent services such as tree trimming, pothole repair, street signage and road drainage. She has also served as a Director of the Water Authority of Great Neck North.

Ellen is concerned about domestic abuse and violence and has developed programs to educate the public about the dangers of, and remedies for, relationship abuse and bullying. She is a trained facilitator in anti-bullying with Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) and has conducted numerous workshops for middle school students. Ellen also is concerned with the care of senior citizens who wish to remain in their own homes. She has taken an active role on the Veterans and Senior Affairs Committee and was instrumental in seeing that legislation passed so that Veterans do not have to pay renewal fees for Nassau County Leisure passes. 

During Ellen’s time as a Legislator, she has secured 12 Community Revitalization Program (“CRP”) funds for various municipalities including the Herricks School District, Garden City Park Fire District, Village of Great Neck Estates, Village of Kensington, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire District, Village of Kings Point, Village of Saddle Rock and the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District. Ellen helped organize a sump clean up in North New Hyde Park with the assistance of local Boy Scouts. She has sponsored tax grievance workshops, with representatives from the County Department of Assessment and car seat safety checks with representatives from the County Traffic Safety Board as well as storm preparedness seminars in conjunction with the County Office of Emergency Management.  

Ellen is very involved with several groups in her community. She is the Vice-President of Membership and a former President of the Lulav Group of Hadassah. She received the group’s first annual community service award at their annual dinner. Ellen is also an active member of Temple Israel of Great Neck where she has served on numerous committees, the Board of Trustees and as past president of the Couples Club. She is a flutist with the Great Neck Rotary Summer Band and has been an elected member of the Nominating Committee of the Great Neck Public Library. In 2016, Ellen was honored by COPAY which is an organization in Great Neck that provides services for families such as counseling and substance treatment.

Ellen holds a B.S. in Consumer Economics and Public Policy from Cornell University. She is an involved member of the alumni association and each year interviews high school students who apply to Cornell. She also has an MBA in Finance from New York University. She utilizes her strong background in finance to ask the probing questions to address the County’s record high debt, fee increases, and will ensure your tax dollars are spent properly.

Ellen and her husband Mark, a former trustee of the Village of Great Neck and current Village Justice are the proud parents of three adult children - Deborah, Jonathan, and Laura.
